History

Artist representations of skulls were an important part of many ancient cultures including the Mayans and the Aztecs. In the late 1800s and early 1900s a handful of crystal skulls reportedly found in this area of South America were acquired by prominent museums throughout the world. Over the years the authenticity of these skulls has been highly debated, and some remain on display to this day.

An alien crystal skull is the primary artifact in the hit movie Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Although the storyline is clearly fiction, the movie does provide some of the background of crystal skulls mentioned above.

In modern times carved skulls are prized for their striking lifelike designs and purported metaphysical properties.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Skulls are commonly crafted from a variety of materials including:
amethyst, quartz, tiger’s eye, obsidian, labradorite, bloodstone, malachite, citrine, fluorite, jasper, etc.

The quality and craftsmanship of crystal skulls can vary widely. Some are cut from less desirable stone and crystal, while others feature less than desirable carvings that don't look quite natural.
