Elk Ivory Questions, Answered
What are elk ivories?
Elk ivories are the two rounded upper canine teeth every elk carries — bulls and cows alike. They're true ivory: the last remnant of the tusks elk ancestors carried millions of years ago, which is why hunters often call them “whistlers” or “buglers.” Each elk has exactly two, which makes them the most personal trophy an animal provides.
Is elk ivory legal to own and sell?
Yes. Elk ivories are not elephant ivory — the federal and state ivory bans you may have heard about were written for elephant, walrus, whale, and similar species, and they don't cover North American elk teeth. Ivories from a legally taken elk are yours to keep, sell, or set into jewelry.
Do bull and cow ivories look different?
Usually. Bull ivories tend to be larger, with deeper color and the dark rings collectors prize. Cow ivories are typically smaller and lighter. Both set beautifully — we build every setting around whatever your hunt gave you.
Can I send in my own elk ivories?
That's our specialty. Pick the design you like, add it to your cart, apply your discount code at checkout — ELK100 for one-ivory pieces, ELK200 for two — and mail us your ivories. Our goldsmiths build the setting around your teeth and ship the finished piece back to you, typically within two weeks of your ivories arriving.
Will you cut or reshape my ivory to fit the setting?
Never. Mass-produced elk ivory jewelry is made by grinding teeth down to fit a standard mold. We work the opposite way: each bezel is hand-built around your ivory's natural size and shape, so the character of your tooth — its color, its rings, its story — stays exactly as the mountain made it.
How do I ship my ivories to you safely?
Pack them in a small, rigid box — not an envelope. Envelopes tear in sorting machines, and ivories have been lost that way. Add tracking and include your name and order number. Send USPS packages to PO Box 3532, Park City, UT 84060, and UPS or FedEx packages to 430 Main Street, Park City, UT 84060.
How long does a custom elk ivory piece take?
Custom pieces ship about two weeks after your ivories reach our studio. Pieces made with our own ivory are made to order and ship in two to three weeks. Every piece ships free with 2-day shipping and is covered by our free lifetime warranty on workmanship.
What if I only have one ivory?
You have plenty of options. Most of our rings, pendants, necklaces, and bolo ties are single-ivory designs — use code ELK100 for $100 off. If you have the pair, earrings and cufflinks turn both ivories into a matched set, and code ELK200 takes $200 off.
Do I need to clean my ivories before sending them?
No — send them as they are. We clean and polish every ivory as part of the crafting process. If a tooth has a crack or damage you're worried about, call or text us at (435) 649-6550 and we'll talk it through before you ship.
Can you set deer, moose, or other teeth?
Elk ivories are our specialty, but we're a custom shop at heart. If you have another meaningful tooth or trophy in mind, call or text us at (435) 649-6550 — if it can be set, we can build a piece around it.
