The First Time I Saw A Dolphin

March 16, 2017

In honor of National Dolphin Awareness Month, we want to hear your dolphin stories!

I'll never forget the first time I saw a dolphin.

It was just a couple of months ago!

I've been to the beach hundreds of times over the years on various vacations. I've seen starfish, jellyfish, and all kinds of sea life. But, I'd never seen a dolphin.

The day after Christmas, my brother-in-law had some complications from a surgery and he didn't make it. He was young, it was sudden, and we were all in a state of shock. Friends and family came from all over the country to California for the memorial service.

I was heartbroken for my sister and his parents. Before I left Park City, Ken Whipple, the owner of Park City Jeweler's, said to me, "You're going to see a dolphin this trip. I can feel it. Just wait. You're going to see a dolphin!"

I didn't think much of it because I had never seen one, and certainly didn't expect to this time. The day after the service, I went for a walk along the beach with my sister. My mind was far from dolphins. Suddenly, my sister shouted for me to look! I couldn't believe my eyes, but there was a dolphin, gleefully jumping in the waves. It took my breath away. It was a flash of hope and joy in an otherwise really difficult time. That dolphin reminded me that although the present felt "heavy", there was still joy in my future.

I love to remember that cherished moment with my dolphin ring from Park City Jewelers.
