The mineral pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2, iron(II) disulfide. Pyrite is considered the most common of the sulfide minerals. Pyrite's metallic luster and pale brass-yellow hue give it a superficial resemblance to gold, resulting in the well-known nickname of fool's gold. The color has also led to the nicknames brass, brazzle, and Brazil, primarily used to refer to pyrite found in coal.

Sphaleriate is a mineral that is the chief ore of zine. It consists largely of zinc sulfide in crystalline form, but almost always contains variable iron. When the iron content is high, it is an opaque black variety, marmatite. It is usually found in association with galena, pyrite, and other sulfides along with calcite, dolomite, and fluorite. Miners have also been known to refer to sphalerite as zinc blende, black-jack, and ruby jack.
